Electric cars once looked certain to be the de facto future of the car. But the EU’s recent decision to exempt e-fuel cars and the rising cost of electricity means there’s still a case for the combustion engine. The best hybrid cars combine some of the zero emission driving of an EV with the long-legged pulling power of the internal combustion engine. The best diesel hybrid cars really suit people who do a lot of city and motorway driving.

There aren’t many diesel hybrid cars currently on sale. Which is a shame, because they work particularly well together. Especially plug-in hybrids, which can glide along on electric power in busy streets, then have a diesel engine fire up so it can economically fire down the motorway.

This list contains plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid cars as there aren’t any new self-charging hybrids on the market.

Best diesel hybrids for 2023:

Editor’s choice: Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Comfy and luxury cruiser, now with added zero emissions running

10

Mercedes E-Class front

Three-figure MPG is on the cards, assuming you plug in religiously.

Read our full Mercedes E-Class review

Pros:
✅ Very comfortable

✅ Punchy performance
✅ Upmarket interior

Cons:
❌ PHEV does affect boot size

❌ Expensive

The E-Class is popular the world over – from CEOs to taxi drivers – and everyone in between. It’s unashamedly focussed on comfort and is one of the softest, most forgiving premium saloons on the market.

There are a number of engines on offer, and the one we’re talking about here is the diesel plug-in hybrid, badged E300de. It’s the pick of the range, with a powerful 306hp 2.0-litre diesel and battery pack capable of close to 30 miles. It’s truly an epic cruiser, being quiet, long-legged and fast.

BMW 3 Series

Family favourite is a superb all-rounder

10

BMW 3 Series rear

Also available as an estate if you require a larger boot.

Pros:
✅ Desirable

✅ Lots of tech
✅ Fast and frugal engines

Cons:
❌ Boot isn’t that large

❌ Firm ride on models with large wheels

As far as box ticking goes, very few cars come close to a BMW 3 Series. Family friendly? Check. Fast and fun? Check. Economical? A big ole’ check.

The family-friendly shape comes with a class infotainment setup, the fun element follows the excellent chassis set up and weight distribution, while the economy is courtesy of the mild hybrid diesel engine. The 320d is the most popular choice of 3 Series because it’s smooth and fast, available with four-wheel drive and is capable of 50mpg in the real-world.

Range Rover

The best 4x4xfar

10

Range Rover profile

This is the short-wheelbase model. Yes, you can spec a Range Rover longer than this.

Read our full Range Rover review

Pros:
✅ Decadent interior

✅ Clever infotainment
✅ Off-roading ability

Cons:
❌ Enormous

❌ A lot of money

Opulence doesn’t come much more decadent than this. It’s our Luxury Car of the Year, and with good reason. The interior is a lesson in splendour, from its large comfy seats to its high-tech gadgets and intuitive but show-stopping infotainment setups. The air sprung ride is masterful, and there are very few cars that can come close to it for comfort.

There are two mild hybrid diesel options on offer. The D300 and D350 are essentially the same engine, with two different states of tune. The former has 300hp and the latter has 350hp, hence the names. These engines are quiet, powerful and surprisingly economical. You can expect close to 45mpg on a long run.

Volvo XC60

Posh mid-size SUV

10

Volvo XC60 front

Petrol XC60s aren’t all that economical, so going for a diesel is a sensible choice.

Read our full Volvo XC60 review

Pros:
✅ Spacious, comfy interior

✅ Excellent safety credentials
✅ Lots of choice

Cons:
❌ Not that economical

❌ Bumpy ride with large wheels

Volvo has long shaken off its antique store owner in need of an estate car image in favour of a young professional after a safe and economical car for their family.

The XC60 sits betwixt the XC40 and XC90 in Volvo’s SUV range. We love the relaxed nature of the car – from its neat, fuss-free interior – to its large comfy seats and top-notch safety tech. All models are mild hybrid, and the diesel offers better value than the petrol because they should at least do 40mpg.

Mazda CX-60

Left field SUV choice

10

Mazda CX-60 profile

The CX-60 utilises a surprisingly economical 3.3-litre diesel engine.

Read our Mazda CX-60 review

Pros:
✅ Good value

✅ Zesty performance
✅ Premium interior

Cons:
❌ Unimpressive ride quality

❌ Bigger than you might think

Mazda is a company that does not necessarily follow the crowd. It shuns massive fancy infotainment setups in favour of smaller, and easier to use models.

And it continues to go against the grain with its latest model. The CX-60 uses a 3.3-litre mild hybrid diesel engine. It’s powerful, punchy and unstressed. MPG in the 50s might be on the cards, which is commendable considering the size of the car. Other benefits include the interior, which can be specced with delicious white maple wood trim.

Mercedes-Benz GLE

Impressively tech-laden large SUV

10

Mercedes GLE rear

Enormous Mercedes has sensible running costs thanks to plug-in power.

Read our Mercedes-Benz GLE review

Pros:
✅ Cutting-edge interior

✅ Luxurious
✅ Seven seats

Cons:
❌ Feels large on the road

❌ Infotainment is a bit fiddly

The Mercedes GLE is the pointed star’s second largest SUV, behind the GLS, which even the Americans regard as quite big. The main benefit of the size is that it can be had with seven seats and the interior is frankly enormous. Great for a growing family, then.

Plenty of tech and luxury too of course. There are twin 12.3-inch screens which look classy and are near endlessly configurable. The diesel plug-in hybrid system used here is the same one as in the E-Class at the top of this list, although it’s not quite as economical as it needs to ferry around a fair bit more weight.

Pros:
✅ Great to drive

✅ Intuitive infotainment
✅ High quality interior

Cons:
❌ Not the most practical estate

❌ A little less refined than saloon

One of the most desirable estates on the market, and perfect if you think SUVs are a bit gauche. The 5 Series estate, like the other BMW on this list, is great to drive, making it the estate diesel hybrid of choice if you like taking the scenic route home every now and then.

The mild hybrid diesel on offer here is the same torquey, refined and surprisingly quick one you’ll find in the 3 Series.

BMW X5

Trumps rivals for dynamism

10

BMW X5 profile

Torque-filled diesel engines suit the BMW X5.

Read our full BMW X5 review

Pros:
✅ Great to drive for such a large car

✅ Spacious interior and boot
✅ Ergonomic interior

Cons:
❌ Feels big to manoeuvre

❌ Rear legroom could be better

The X5 is simply the most complete large SUV on the market. Others might be more comfortable or better off-road, but as a package for transporting families in luxury not much can touch it. It helps that it comes with muscular engines too, perfect for ferrying people and luggage or towing a trailer.

You can, should you so wish, spec a 3.0-litre straight six mild hybrid diesel in your BMW X5. The 0-62mph sprint is dealt with in below six seconds and it should see 40mpg. Incredibly smooth, too.

Volvo XC90

An SUV from a company famous for estates

10

Volvo XC90 front

Handsome and with lots of safety kit, the XC90 is a class act.

Read our full Volvo XC90 review

Pros:
✅ Elegant styling

✅ Loads of room for passengers
✅ High-tech safety kit

Cons:
❌ Feels a bit outdated

❌ Fiddly infotainment

You’ve probably seen a fair few XC90s parked up on streets you’re envious of. It has become the last word in posh school run SUVs thanks to the minimalist design and clever interior touches. It’s a seven-seater too, which helps out a great deal.

Only one diesel engine is on offer here. Unlike with the BMW above, it’s not hugely quick. But it is relaxed and hushed and paired with an automatic gearbox that is near telepathic in selecting what gear you want to be in.

Range Rover Sport

A Range Rover that’s been on a diet

10

Range Rover Sport rear

You can spec sensible diesel engines, despite the sport name.

Read our full Range Rover Sport review

Pros:
✅ Remarkably good to drive

✅ Impressive interior
✅ Plenty of engine options

Cons:
❌ Huge, but no seven-seat option

❌ Lots of money

For all intents and purposes, the Sport is the smaller and sportier brother to the full-fat Range Rover. It has the same interior and engines, but it’s sacrificed overall space to provide greater dynamism. Instead of leaning like its bigger brother, it corners pretty flat and can carry some serious speed.

There are the D300 and D350 engines nicked straight from the Range Rover, as well as the D250, which offers less power but is a bit cheaper and more economical.

Best diesel hybrid cars FAQ

What’s the difference between a diesel hybrid and a diesel plug-in hybrid?

Both types of diesel hybrid are powered by a combination of a petrol or diesel engine and an electric motor with battery pack. They’re a stepping stone between ICE and EV, offering some of the advantages and drawbacks of both – but bear in mind, both types of hybrid are rare.

The key difference between a diesel hybrid and a diesel plug-in hybrid is that the latter has a much larger battery and motor and needs to be plugged in to keep it topped up. The former’s battery is solely charged up by the engine, which means you don’t have to deal with cables and public charging.

Is diesel hybrid better than petrol?

It’s different. But certainly because of the fuel efficiency of diesel, you’ll go much, much further between pump refills than you will with a petrol hybrid. Although the diesel engine is more economical than its petrol counterpart, it’s also less refined and currently, it’s also more expensive to buy fuel for it.

What is a hybrid diesel car?

A diesel hybrid combines a diesel engine with an electric motor, and the two systems work with each other to move the vehicle. This allows the car to burn less fossil fuel, resulting in better fuel efficiency than a traditional engine. Electric power boosts the performance of the engine.

Hybrids charge the battery through its internal system, so they do not need recharging from an extenal source. Plug-in hybrids do, and run on both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine and you can charge its battery by plugging in to an outside electrical source.

The rusty old diesel Mercedes-Benz sedan slowly creeps down the road. Its rattling engine can be heard from a mile away as the driver has to downshift to climb a hill while clouds of black smoke spew from its tailpipe.

This is what many Americans imagine when they think of a car with a diesel engine: Noisy, dirty, unreliable and often underpowered. Both diesel engines and the fuel that powers them are more expensive in the United States than in Europe, where about 50 percent of all cars are diesels. Also, emissions regulations in some states mean that diesel cars cannot even be sold there.

Modern diesel engines are moving away from the stereotype of being noisy and polluting, and new diesel technologies from automakers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen are producing cleaner diesel engines which can be sold in all 50 states.

The new diesels are cleaner, more powerful, and more reliable than ever before. In fact, some diesel engines offer incredible gas mileage — the European 2008 BMW 120d Coupe offers an estimated 55 mpg (23.4 km/l) [source: BMW].

So what would happen if a carmaker built a diesel hybrid? How would it perform, what mileage could it achieve, and what impact would it have on the environment? In this article, we’ll look at a few different takes on the diesel hybrid — you may be surprised at how well they perform and save fuel, too.

Hybrid diesel cars arguably represent the best of both worlds. Around town, they have the ability to run on electric power for shorter bursts (which means less air pollution), but then on the motorway their diesel engines kick in to provide good long-distance fuel economy. So it’s a bit odd that they’re so uncommon, with many diesel hybrids coming, going and not being replaced. Regardless, we’ve rounded up some of the best diesel hybrids and plug-in hybrid diesels (new and old), so you can find the car that’s right for you.

Volvo V60 (2013-2017) review

The previous-generation V60 D6 was one of the first diesel plug-in hybrids, and could travel for 32 miles on battery power. You’ll have to look to the second-hand market to find this model, but it should still be decent to drive. Don’t expect typical levels of Volvo practicality, though — this estate car’s boot is tiny.

Advice about hybrid cars

Diesel hybrid cars FAQs

Why aren’t there many diesel hybrid cars available?

There are a couple of reasons why diesel hybrid cars aren’t all that common. When these types of powertrains were first launched around 10 years ago they were pretty expensive, so lots of people were put off the idea of buying one based on the sticker price alone. That said, while used models might be a fairly rare find, you will be able to buy one for a far more reasonable price today.

The other reason why diesel hybrids aren’t all that common (at least in the UK), is because diesel cars in general have out of fashion with buyers due to concerns surrounding the emissions produced by older diesel models.

How do diesel hybrid cars work?

Diesel hybrid cars practically work in the same way as a regular petrol hybrid vehicle. In extremely simple terms, the car’s diesel engine will be supplemented by a battery and an electric motor, which enable the car to drive for short periods of time on electricity alone. The electricity that’s stored in the battery and is used to power the electric motor will either be generated by running the diesel engine, or through regenerative braking.

Usually, the electric motor will take the lead when you’re travelling at low speeds or in stop-start traffic, so if you spend most of your time driving in town, this is where you’ll potentially maximise your fuel savings. Then, when you’re running at higher speeds (such as on the motorway), the diesel engine will take over proceedings.

Plug-in hybrid diesel cars come with much larger batteries, which can be charged by plugging them directly into the mains. Their bigger batteries mean they can run on electricity for much longer distances before their diesel engines kick in, which make them even more suitable for town driving. That said, they’re expensive, and those large batteries will often lead to compromises in practicality, such as a smaller boot than a non-hybrid model, or a lack of seven seats in an SUV.

Are diesel hybrid cars going to be banned?

From 2035, the sale of all brand new hybrids — regardless of whether they’re diesel or petrol hybrids — will be banned. That said, if by that point you really don’t fancy going electric, you’ll still be able to buy used hybrid diesels. You’ll probably be able to pick them up for a pretty low price, too.

Should I buy a diesel or petrol hybrid car?

Whether or not you buy a diesel or a petrol hybrid car really comes down to what your typical vehicle usage patterns look like. If you spend the vast majority of your time driving around town, or don’t do a huge number of miles in any given year, you won’t benefit from running a diesel hybrid car and would be better suited to a petrol hybrid.

That said, if you do a lot of motorway miles in a year, but still want a car that can run on zero emissions when you’re in town, then a diesel hybrid would be worth considering. Diesel engines typically use less fuel than equivalent petrol engines at motorway speeds, which means high-mileage owners stand to save a bit of money at the pump.
